To provide for a Statistician-General as head of Statistics South Africa, who is responsible for the collection, production and dissemination of official and other statistics, including the conducting of a census of the population, and for co-ordination among producers of statistics; to establish a Statistics Council and provide for its functions; to repeal certain legislation; and to provide for connected matters.

The Statistics Act, 1999 (Act No. 6 of 1999), has been updated and amended by the Statistics Amendment Act 29 of 2024, Notice No. 5724 of GG51805, dated 20 December 2024 – effective 1 October 2025 per Commencement Proclamation Notice 6692, GG53452, dated 30 September 2025.
The Statistics Act, 1999 (Act No. 6 of 1999), has been updated with the publication of the Date of Population Census 2022, as per Notice No. 1628 of GG45655, dated 15 December 2021.
The Statistics Act, 1999, has been published in Government Gazette Number 19957, Notice No. 489, dated 21 April 1999.A commencement date is still to follow.
